When one speaks about community, rarely one speaks about commuters. The word “commuter” evokes a sense of transience, as a commuter is defined by their travel habit, leaving one place and heading to another, either for work, school, or other reasons. Every commuter has their own destination, but they share a routine and space, and sometimes even time. But rarely do they share a meaningful interaction, at least not on the physical train platform. 

One in every 10 Greater Jakarta residents are commuters, according to Statistics Indonesia report in 2019.  With 30 million residents, Greater Jakarta is connected by various means of transportations. The Commuter Line (known as KRL or electric rail train), which operates in the aglomeration area, serves 337.331 travelers every day in 2021. If given the space and opportunity, these commuters surely can become one huge community that connects people from various backgrounds but nonetheless share the same habit. 

FromLabs has just started a collaboration with Surge in creating a digital twin for selected train stations in Jakarta to serve these commuters and to create a platform where they can interact and build a community. Surge is an Indonesian digital company that has been working on the digital transformation through connectivity since 2012. FromLabs takes part in developing features such as registrations, gamification, messaging and conference call, and also in charge of the overall platform to run smoothly.  

The project, one of the first implementations of metaverse in Indonesia, puts the commuters at its heart. By creating a digital platform that is accessible from anywhere and at anytime, the digital train station aims to foster a sense of connection and belonging among the commuters. The platform will also become a one-stop place where commuters can get updates on the train schedules, chat to fellow commuters, share information about delicacies and small business around the area, as well as accessing customer’s service to help them with other information. 

The digital paltform also connects businesses with their potential customers by providing virtual advertising and virtual tenant system. Aside from its social features, the platform is also equipped with gamification in which users can gain points and receive vouchers or prizes. 

The project is estimated to be launched later this year, with Mangga Besar station in Central Jakarta as the pilot. The station is significant as it is on the Jakarta Kota-Bogor/Nambo line – connecting Jakarta and Bogor. The next station planned to have a digital twin is Bogor station followed by Manggarai and Tanah Abang. 

Upon creating an account, a commuter is transported into a digital twin of their regular train station. They can explore the station through an avatar, chat with fellow commuters, as well as interact and conduct business with the vendors inside the digital train station. In place of emoji, commuter have several reactions and gestures to choose from in order to have a more lively experience, from pointing and waving to applauding and doing happy dance. 

FromLabs is elated to be working on this project, as we believe in the importance of community especially in the urban areas. As Greater Jakarta becomes bigger –as do many other megacities in the world– more and more people will become commuters and spend their time in transit. We sincerely hope that this project can provide a platform where people can connect and interact meaningfully, without haste or worry. 

The cliche goes: the journey is more important than the destination. We at FromLabs believe that we can make digital train stations as something to look forward to, as a part of someone’s habit and community, somewhere to visit if not to stay at, even if only for a while.
